Before the weekend, one of our Maui wedding couples "checked in" to let
me know how they had arrived and to give me their room number. I always
appreciate it when couples do this.
(Some couples they arrive on the island and don't contact us at all. To make
sure that they got here we sometimes have to call their hotel (or condo),
and we've even been known to check with the Hawaii wedding license agent to
make sure they arrived for their appointment).
This groom called the morning of the couple's planned wedding, but surprised
me by saying that he and his fiance had had a big argument and they had
decided not to get married! They were going to cancel the wedding.
Of course, my heart dropped. This certainly wouldn't be the first time a
wedding couple had split on the day of their wedding. But I didn't hear any
emotion in his voice. I didn't want to say, "Are you kidding with me" if
indeed, they had really broken up, so I waited a few moments and the groom
said, "Just joking with you."
He was pleased that he "had me going." And so I told him, "I owed him one."
I told my husband about his joke, and not long after he performed the
wedding ceremony, John told the couple with a really straight face: "I have
good news and I have bad news." They looked up at him seriously.
"The bad news is that ceremony wasn't legal." He paused. "The good news is .
. . I got a great deal on my auto insurance from Geigo!" It was then that
the groom new he had his just reward for his earlier kidding in the day.
We enjoy our wedding couples and often have fun with them in such ways. Of
course, it all depends upon the couple and their sense of humor, but we
definitely have a good time with our Maui wedding couples.
